A Ritual to Honor the Imbolc

Today, I want to offer you support on a very sacred night of the year as we feel the stirrings of energy and new life around us, Imbolc. This is the time of year where we reach the midpoint of winter. Beginning at sundown today and continuing through tomorrow, this seasonal celebration is a time to honor the earliest breaths of spring.

Now, I know it might still be cold, rainy, or the ground might be covered with snow where you live, but look closely. Hints of change can be found with the days growing longer since the Winter Solstice, the sap rising in the trees, and the seeds starting to germinate.

After months of death, hibernation, and rest, life is beginning to stir once again. You may only see tiny hints of this above the surface, but things are really beginning to wake up down below.

Why does this matter? Because it is symbolic of what’s happening in our own lives. During this time of year, our spirits are beginning to stretch and shake off the winter stagnation - it’s as if they’re waking up from a long hibernation.

With this awakening, all of the ideas and plans you’ve been dreaming about over the winter are ready for a little more attention and action. Slow, intentional steps so that they can become a reality.

It’s also often a time of transition, change, and leaving what’s comfortable in order to grow more fully into yourself. Throughout these last few months you’ve been sitting in the darkness, turning inward, and identifying what you’re really truly ready to let go of.

The Imbolc is an invitation to finally let things die off once and for all. Which is amazing and exciting, but also really freaking hard!

It’s hard because change and making our dreams a reality really excites us! As humans we’re naturally seekers who are continually improving and bettering our lives and the world around us. And at the same time we’re also creatures of habit. We love the familiar, the comfortable, and the known.

But real change requires us to step into the unknown, sit with discomfort, and let what we once knew go. The Imbolc is a time to face all of these challenges and tap into our innate strength so that we can rise up and make those winter dreams that have been stirring a reality.

This mid-season point can be such a huge catalyst for transformation when we take a little time to slow down and tune in. To help you do so, I’ve included a sweet ritual below. I hope this helps you in honoring the  Imbolc so that you can lean into the growing energy of the season that's here to support you.

A sweet ritual to help you honor the Imbolc so that you can lean into the growing energy of the season that's here to support you!

Imbolc Candle Ritual

This ritual was written by Patti Wigington and has been slightly modified.

Supplies needed: 7 tea light candles, something to light them with, and your journal.

* Light the first candle. As you do so, say:
Although it is now dark, I come seeking light.
In the chill of winter, I come seeking life.

* Light the second candle, saying:
I call upon fire, that melts the snow and warms the hearth.
I call upon fire, that brings the light and makes new life.
I call upon fire to purify me with your flames.

* Light the third candle. Say:
This light is a boundary, between positive and negative.
That which is outside, shall stay without.
That which is inside, shall stay within.

* Light the fourth candle. Say:
I call upon fire, that melts the snow and warms the hearth.
I call upon fire, that brings the light and makes new life.
I call upon fire to purify me with your flames.

* Light the fifth candle, saying:
Like fire, light and love will always grow.
Like fire, wisdom and inspiration will always grow.

* Light the sixth candle, and say:
I call upon fire, that melts the snow and warms the hearth.
I call upon fire, that brings the light and makes new life.
I call upon fire to purify me with your flames.

* Finally, light the last candle. As you do so, visualize the seven flames coming together as one. As the light builds, see the energy growing in a purifying glow.
Fire of the hearth, blaze of the sun,
cover me in your shining light.
I am awash in your glow, and tonight I am made pure.

* Take a few moments and meditate on the light of your candles. Think about this sacred day, a time of healing and inspiration and purification.

Do you have something in your life that needs to be healed? Are you feeling stagnant, for lack of inspiration? Are there changes currently taking place in your life that are making you feel out of balance or uncomfortable? Visualize the light as a warm, enveloping energy that wraps itself around you, healing your ailments, igniting the spark of creativity, and purifying that which needs it most.

* Take a moment to write your reflections in your journal.
